REVEGETATION GUIDE
- what to plant at your place -

If you are planning for a year – plant rice. If you are planning for a decade – plant trees.
If you are planning for a lifetime – educate people.

YYLN REVEGETATION GUIDE

This guide was developed with financial assistance through the Wellington Shire Community Assistance Grants in 2014. It is intended for use by landholders in the YYLN region, however, the basic revegetation advice may be relevant wherever you live. It is not intended as a comprehensive, all you ever needed to know guide about revegetation.
This is a nuts and bolts guide with an emphasis on those species of plants most relevant to revegetation in our Landcare Network.
Successful revegetation of native plants is not something you do on a spare weekend. It is a process that requires planning, good preparation, patience and resilience. It can be very satisfying to notice tiny germinants poking out of the ground; tubestock shooting over the tops of tree guards; watch small birds begin to use the shrubby growth as habitat as they feed on the insects who have already taken up residence; or seeing wattles flower and knowing it is a sign of self replacement and therefore sustainability.

Ecological Vegetation Class (EVC)
Plant selection is based upon the dominant Ecological Vegetation Class (EVC) for your area.  There are three ways you can select the plants for your area based upon the relevant EVC:
  • If you know the EVC for your area go to the EVC listing
  • Select the Species List tab above and select your area from the drop down list
  • Log into DWELP wesite Nature Kit to determine the EVC for the area required then go to the EVC listing.
If you have difficulty in finding or understanding the EVC for your area call the YYLN Office for assistance.

This guide is made up of three parts:
1. Basic Revegetation Advice includes guidance on every aspect of a revegetation project with helpful checklists and useful support information.
2. Planning suggestions including checklists.
3. Species List includes foundation species lists for each Landcare group in the YYLN region as well as variation lists for additional choices in planting. These lists are based on the indigenous species known for each area and are divided in accordance with the Ecological Vegetation Class (EVC) system.
