CURRENT PROJECTS

CURRENT WORKS

Seed Propagation Project

With the support of the Wellington Shire Council, YYLN is launching a seed propagation project!
YYLN is creating propagation kits (tubes, racks, potting mix, fertiliser and seed) and offering regular workshops on how to grow plants at home for your own use and/or for Landcare projects.  The propagation process takes around 6 months.  There will be a small cost of those growing plants for their own projects ~20c/plant.  (Note: Nursery-bought plants are $1.20 - $1.50 each.)

To register your interest contact YYLN Board member, Bronwyn Teesdale by text Mob 0428 559 582.

JARR Project (2008 - ongoing)

Picture
Group: Various across YYLN
Supported by a range of partners including Wettenhall Environment Trust, Waterwatch, Trust for Nature, Greening Australia, Corner Inlet Connections, Coastcare, HVP Plantations, WGCMA, Wellington Shire Council, and ParksVic

The Jack and Albert River Restoration project first commenced in 2008 and continues to involve a series of work types over an area of some 65,000 hectares. Focus includes Corner Inlet Seagrass Refurbishment, Golden Creek Restoration, tackling Woody Weeds, JARR Water Quality Monitoring, a Short Film Festival, Reserve Restoration, and an ongoing Bird Monitoring Program.  For more information, check out the JARR website or the projects detailed below.

Corner Inlet Broadleaf Seagrass Restoration - Building Fishery Resilience under Water

Picture
Picture
The Corner Inlet Broadleaf Seagrass Restoration Project will plant 5 hectares of Broadleaf Seagrass (Posidonia Australis) using scuba divers at a site off Port Albert, Victoria.  This project will be delivered via an existing partnership between the Yarram Yarram Landcare Network, the commercial fishing industry of Corner Inlet and the University of Western Australia.  This restoration technique will involve harvesting shoots from health donor meadows of Broadleaf Seagrass and transplanting the material to a site nearby in a checker-board arrangement.  Over time, the plants will spread as the seagrass coalesces along the ocean floor.  It compliments our existing efforts to restore 200 hectares of broadleaf seagrass at other sites on Corner Inlet using sandbags to aid seagrass growth.  By heading underwater, we will be able to restore broadleaf seagrass year-round as opposed to a two week window during summer that we are currently limited to.

Corner Inlet Posidonia Partnerships

Picture
Funded by Fisheries Habitat Restoration Program.

Yarram Yarram Landcare Network is partnering with OzFish and Corner Inlet Fishers to build on the extensive Posidonia seagrass restoration efforts already undertaken.  Working together to restore this habitat means greater resources and shared knowledge to achieve a healthy and vibrant fishery for the future.
The project aims to deploy the sand snake recovery method over 6 hectares, build new partnerships between recreational and commercial fishers, and to collect over 100,000 Posidonia seeds to be delivered to restoration sites.

Nest Boxes in the Strzelecki's (2022-2023)

Picture
Group: Wonyip Landcare Group
Funded By: Victorian
Government under the Victorian Landcare Program

The Wonyip Landcare Group has installed  over 90 nest-boxes for arboreal species across the Wonyip district which includes damp and wet forest terrain.  Target species include bats, feather-tailed and greater gliders, owls, crimson rosellas, eastern rosellas, and rainbow lorikeets.  The project included two field days.  The Wonyip Landcare Group is on schedule to complete the project in May/June 2023.

Connecting Remnant Vegetation Patches in the Gippsland Plains

Funded by: Victorian Government under the Victorian Landcare Program

This project is restoring 1.8 hectares of wildlife habitat in the Gippsland Coastal Plain region near Woodside, Victoria.  A total of 2,200 native tube-stock will be planted and areas direct-seeded to restore habitat.  1.32 kilometres of fencing will be erected to create new wildlife corridors on grazing land and connect remnant patches of vegetation in the landscape.  The project will also contribute to maintaining soil moisture during future dry periods and preserving topsoil.

Improving Bird Habitat in Lower Albert River and Nooramunga RAMSAR site

Picture
Funded by: Victorian Government under the Victorian Landcare Program

This project is addressing the fragmentation of important bird habitat within the lower reaches of the Albert River where it interfaces with the Nooramunga Ramsar site.  Through the creation of more than 3.11 ha of new bird habitat, it will support the area's 350 bird species, including 32 species of wading birds and the endangered Orange-bellied parrot and Fairy Tern.
This project will create a vital new wetland area directly adjoining the lower reach of the Albert River, strengthening habitat for the migratory waders that frequent Corner Inlet - Nooramunga each year.  Additional wildlife corridors will facilitate links with disjunct patches of remnant vegetation, creating important habitat for many terrestial and arboreal bird species as well as positively improving localised biodiversity within heavily degraded agricultural landscapes.

Establishing new riparian zones and improving water quality for the Tarra River

Picture
Funded by: Victorian Government under the Victorian Landcare Program

This project is improving riparian habitat and water quality in a vital reach of the Tarra River prior to the drinking water take-off for Yarram township and the Corner Inlet - Nooramunga Ramsar site.
Sensitive areas in close proximity to the Tarra River will be fenced and revegetated and important stands of remnant vegetation protected in the process.  Tree species will target a mix of understorey shrubs and grasses, in addition to larger canopy trees.  This project will erect 830 metres of fencing to facilitate wildlife corridors and plant 3500 trees and shrubs to create new habitat for the greater glider, lyrebird and regionally-distinct Strzelecki Koala.  Additional direct-seeding, delivered via hand broadcasting will ensure a high density of tree, shrubs and grasses are revegetated in areas adjacent to the Tarra River.

Restore Habitat - Two Vulnerable Listed EVCs for the Endangered Lace Monitor and Koala

Group: Merrimans Creek Landcare Group
Funded by Victorian Govenment under the Victorian Landcare Program.

The 40 acre conservation covenanted site is comprised of two EVCs listed as 'vulnerable' including: Damp Sands Herb-rich Woodland (EVC 3) and Lowland Forest (EVC 16).  Sections throughout the site are becoming colonised by Burgan (Kunzea ericoides) causing the condition of the forest to decline.  A vegetation quality assessment (VQA) conducted in January 2022 confirmed the condition of the site as 'high' but identified colonising Burgan as a threat to the ecosystem. By controlling this shrub using a 'cut and paint' herbicide treatment method, the condition and quality of these vulnerable EVCs will be restored for biodiversity - particularly the endangered Lace Monitor and Koala present on the site.  The site has been monitored quarterly for the past 6 years as part of a Birds Australia project and to date has recorded 65 bird species making its 'richness' of birdlife unique for the area.

Projects are where we can have the most impact.  These can be undertaken by individuals, groups or by the whole Network.
Projects are
funded from grants or donations.  Funding sources can include both Federal and State  Governments,  philanthropic groups and private organisations.  The value of these grants varies considerably depending upon availability of funds and the grant classification.
Often, funding becomes available at short notice...
