CURRENT WORKS

JARR Project (2008 - ongoing)

Picture
Group: Various across YYLN
Funded by: A range of partners including Wettenhall Environment Trust, Waterwatch, Trust for Nature, Greening Australia, Corner Inlet Connections, Coastcare, HVP Plantations, WGCMA, Wellington Shire Council, and ParksVic

The Jack and Albert River Restoration project first commenced in 2008 and continues to involve a series of work types over an area of some 65,000 hectares. Focus includes Corner Inlet Seagrass Refurbishment, Golden Creek Restoration, tackling Woody Weeds, JARR Water Quality Monitoring, a Short Film Festival, Reserve Restoration, and an ongoing Bird Monitoring Program.  For more information, check out the JARR website or the projects detailed below.

A three-year project to collect fruit and seed from the Broadleaf Seagrass in Corner Inlet, to re-seed a number of sites across the inlet and to monitor the impact of these activities.

Improving Bird Habitat in Lower Albert River and Nooramunga RAMSAR site

Picture
Funded by: Victorian Landcare Grant

This project is addressing the fragmentation of important bird habitat within the lower reaches of the Albert River where it interfaces with the Nooramunga Ramsar site.  Through the creation of more than 3.11 ha of new bird habitat, it will support the area's 350 bird species, including 32 species of wading birds and the endangered Orange-bellied parrot and Fairy Tern.

This project will create a vital new wetland area directly adjoining the lower reach of the Albert River, strengthening habitat for the migratory waders that frequent Corner Inlet - Nooramunga each year.  Additional wildlife corridors will facilitate links with disjunct patches of remnant vegetation, creating important habitat for many terrestial and arboreal bird species as well as positively improving localised biodiversity within heavily degraded agricultural landscapes.

Establishing new riparian zones and improving water quality for the Tarra River

Funded by: Victorian Landcare Grant

This project is improving riparian habitat and water quality in a vital reach of the Tarra River prior to the drinking water take-off for Yarram township and the Corner Inlet - Nooramunga Ramsar site.
Sensitive areas in close proximity to the Tarra River will be fenced and revegetated and important stands of remnant vegetation protected in the process.  Tree species will target a mix of understorey shrubs and grasses, in addition to larger canopy trees.  This project will erect 830 metres of fencing to facilitate wildlife corridors and plant 3500 trees and shrubs to create new habitat for the greater glider, lyrebird and regionally-distinct Strzelecki Koala.  Additional direct-seeding, delivered via hand broadcasting will ensure a high density of tree, shrubs and grasses are revegetated in areas adjacent to the Tarra River.

Nest Boxes in the Strzelecki's (2022-2023)

Picture
Group: Wonyip Landcare Group
Funded By: Victorian Landcare Grant (VLG)

The Wonyip Landcare Group is making and installing 91 nest-boxes for arboreal species across the Wonyip district which includes damp and wet forest terrain.  Target species include bats, feather-tailed and greater gliders, owls, crimson rosellas, eastern rosellas, and rainbow lorikeets.  The project will include two community events.  The Wonyip Landcare Group is on schedule to complete the project in March 2023.

Connecting Remnant Vegetation Patches in the Gippsland Plains

Funded by: Victorian Landcare Grant

This project is restoring 1.8 hectares of wildlife habitat in the Gippsland Coastal Plain region near Woodside, Victoria.  A total of 2,200 native tube-stock will be planted and areas direct-seeded to restore habitat.  1.32 kilometres of fencing will be erected to create new wildlife corridors on grazing land and connect remnant patches of vegetation in the landscape.  The project will also contribute to maintaining soil moisture during future dry periods and preserving topsoil.

Won Wron Biolink and Social Connection for Wellbeing

Funded by: Landcare Australia Decade of Landcare Restoration Grant

This project aims to reconnect a 370 Ha remnant vegetation patch that is west of the Hyland Highway with the Won Wron State Forest to the east, also linking with the previously vegetation along Bodmans Creek, that bisects the property.
The Won Wron State Forest, 6,700 ha, is contiguous with the Mullundung State Forest, 13,800 ha. Together they form a vast expanse of remnant vegetation that is critical to local biodiversity and of significant value to the Brataualung people of the Gunaikurnai nation.
The project landowner has witnessed native wildlife being vulnerable to harassment by livestock while traversing the property. This includes the Koala, whose genetically-diverse local Strzelecki Ranges population is of particular conservation value.
Three 15m wide biolinks will be fenced, incorporating more than 1ha of agricultural land. This area, as well as gaps in the protected forest to the east, will be planted with 3000 tree, grasses and shrubs. The biolinks on the flatter area will also be direct-sown. To further aid faunal dispersal, impenetrable weeds such as blackberry will be controlled.
This work will provide corridors for the safe passage of native fauna such as the koala.

Drought Ready Gippsland - Increasing Extension and Adoption of Drought Resilience Farming Practices in Gippsland

This project is delivering 30 activities at a local and regional level to extended 14 existing research and development projects in Gippsland across the following themes.
  • Growing harvest and long-term storage of fodder to provide reserves for future drought events
  • Establishment and management of drought resilient pastures and crops that will assist with managing feed gaps present during drought conditions
  • Assisting producers to map and understand the movement and health of farm water sources to increase drought resilience.
  • Getting our people and our farms drought ready by increasing capacity to utilise digital technology drought decision making support tools
  • Building drought resilience soils by increasing producer knowledge, confidence and skills to increase water and nutrient holding capacity of their farms soil.
The activities will reach more than 200 farming businesses, it will transfer knowledge from experts and education institutions in practical ways to fuel adoption.
The following partners have been engaged in the co-design of the project and have actively and established working relationships with the lead applicant:

Food and Fibre Gippsland (Gippsland Drought Node Leader)
