Achievements - on-ground

Between January 2008 and January 2014, the JARR Project has attracted substantial funding for a wide range of projects.  Working closely with our partners, a significant change has occurred in our landscape!

Feb 2008 – Oct 2008
2008 Improving Land Health in the Jack & Albert  Rivers (JARR) Catchment –YYLN Salinity Project
10km fencing for wildlife corridors, 22,500 tube-stock planted, 40ha perennial pastures established, EM31 mapping over 450ha across 12 project sites.
Funding source:  DSE – New Generation Landcare (NGL)

Oct 2008 - 2009
Rabbits, Foxes, Boxthorn & Gorse Program Integrated Landcare Program (ILP)
50 ha Boxthorn & Gorse removed, 5,000 tube-stock planted, 5 ha rabbit warrens deep ripped.
Funding source:  Better Catchments Better Farming  / Second Generation Landcare

2008 - 2013
800 km roadside weeds & rabbits treated and followed up.

2009 - 2010
10 ha wildlife corridor protected & revegetated Hancock Victoria Plantations.

Gippsland Coastal Plains Gorse Control Program (GCPGCP) – Yarram Landcare Leading the Way
Gorse control / community extension program targeting approx. 2000 ha of Gorse infestations across Port Albert, Alberton & Yarram areas.

Corner Inlet Connections (CIC) – JARR
1.     JARR Blackberry Suppression / Erosion Control Program (CFOC/WGCMA)

255.92 ha Blackberry treated & mapped, 10,000 tube-stock planted.

3500 ha Blackberry treated & mapped, 10 ha gullies protected, 4 km fencing, 10,000 tube-stock planted. 250 ha saltmarsh protected, 8 km fencing, 7,000 tube-stock planted.

5 ha wildlife corridors & shelterbelts fenced, 10ha weed control, 10,500 tube-stock planted.

Victorian Landcare Grant – JARR Project
5 ha wildlife corridor, 2km fencing, 3 ha weed control, 3,000 tube-stock planted.

Jack & Albert River Restoration Project (JARR)
Funding source:  DEPI - Communities for Nature Grants Program (Round 1)
2012 - 2014
2000 ha Blackberry treated, 30 ha revegetation & remnant protection, 10,000 tube-stock planted.
Two JARR community workshops.

2013 – 2014
Richmond Football Club Landcare Grant
Engage local students in a JARR activity through the establishment of wildlife corridors at Yarram Secondary College.
Funding source:  Richmond Football Club

Total funds brought into the JARR project for on-ground work between 2008 – 2014 = $1,920,164

Achievements  - in the community

A critical component to the long-term success of  theJARR project is ensuring the community remain an integral part of the planning and execution. The pride that develops when an idea slowly begins to evolve into reality is something of immense joy when so much hard work is involved.

Here are some of our community engagement initiatives since 2010

  • Planning meetings held with each relevant Landcare group to develop the Biodiversity Blueprint;
  • Bird Identification Day with renowned bird illustrator and Ornithologist, Nicholas Day followed by a BBQ lunch;
  • Quarterly JARR Committee meetings with invitations to representatives of all our partners;
  • Development, production and distribution of five indigenous species field guide brochures;
  • Tree planting on Hedley Range Road;
  • Spatial Vision Interactive Mapper Workshop;
  • Blackberry Control Field Day, Binginwarri;
  • Walk, Talk and Gawk at Hazel Park Flora Reserve plus picnic lunch;
  • Visit to Heggen's property to see revegetation works with talk by Thomasin Gannon from Eccocentric Consulting about EVCs, Carbon Storage, Trading and Offsets;
  • Coastal wildlife display at Port Albert Hall;
  • Reptile Ramble with Steve Derby;
  • Walk, Talk and Gawk at Balook property looking at a rainforest buffer project and talking about Conservation Covenants plus picnic lunch;
  • Walk, Talk and Gawk slong the Strzelecki Trail to learn how to bird watch plus picnic lunch;
    Walk, Talk and Gawk to see revegetation efforts on a Devon North property;
    Walk, Talk and Gawk to discover what plant life occurs in the Binginwarri State Forest;
  • Strzelecki Koala information night;
  • Binginwarri Biodiversity study project launch plus BBQ;
  • Birdwatching in Alberton West State Forest;
  • Binginwarri LCG Information Day highlighting Trust for Nature and Land for Wildlife with free BBQ;
  • Bird Watching morning in May's Bush;
  • Binginwarri tree planting day and BBQ;
  • Wonyip tree planting day and BBQ;
  • Binginwarri tree planting day and BBQ;
  • Plant Identification and Mapping workshop;
  • Binginwarri Wildflower Wander in the Won Wron State Forest;
  • Wildflower Wander in the Coastal heathlands of Gelliondale;
  • Binginwarri Landcare Twitch-a-thon at a variety of locations;
  • JARR Project presentation at the 2012 National Landcare Conference;
  • Coastcare community planting day in Port Albert;
  • Birdwatching with Birdlife, East Gippsland locations including Port Albert, Hiawatha and Corner Inlet;
  • Walk, Talk and Gawk looking at HVP Koala Corridors Project;
  • Birdwatching at White Woman's Waterhole;
  • Fungi Foray in alberton West State Forest;
  • YYLN Board and JARR committee member's tour of projects including JARR;
  • Biodiversity Blueprint workshop;
  • Birdwatching in Gelliondale;
  • Nomination of the Norman Wettenhall for a Victorian Landcare Partner's Award and attendance at the Awards ceremony. They won.
  • Snake Safety Awareness Workshop;
  • Binginwarri Bike Ride;
  • Regular Annual get-togethers for each of the relevant Landcare Groups; plus
  • Regular feature articles on JARR activities in the YYLN Quarterly Newsletters;

This list does not include the many Landcare Network activities organised by other groups outside the JARR area, which are also attended by JARR partners, nor does it include non-Landcare partner initiatives or project collaborations with them.
