ABOUT US

OUR NETWORK

Landcare is a joint effort between the community, government and business to protect, enhance and improve our environment.  It began in Victoria in 1986 and has become one of the most active and effective means of caring for the environment in Australia.

OUR NETWORK

The Yarram Yarram Landcare Network (YYLN) was established in 1995. The Network covers a diverse area of approximately 118,000 hectares stretching from the temperate rainforests of the Strzelecki Ranges to the Ramsar-listed wetlands of Corner Inlet and Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park, encompassing the Giffard Plain, along the Ninety Mile Beach to Seaspray.

YYLN has a long history, with some local groups among the oldest and most active in the State. We are proud of our local contribution.

The YYLN is the umbrella organisation for nine active Landcare Groups, and provides support and strategic direction across the YYLN area. Our groups are made up of volunteers usually from the local area. Members are involved in a range of activities and events including: protecting remnant vegetation and revegetation, invasive plant and animal control, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education. The Landcare Groups also provide a framework for locals to get together.

The YYLN is a not-for profit, incorporated association, managed by a volunteer Board (made up of local people) who ensure the organisation is well governed, provides strategic direction for the region and is representative of the local members.

YYLN has employed staff and contractors who manage the day-to-day running of the organisation and delivery of multiple sustainable agricultural and environmental stewardship projects. Staff play a vital role in coordinating on-ground works, developing funding submissions, providing group support, developing partnerships and responding to community needs.

YYLN collaborates with four other Landcare Networks in the West Gippsland catchment area.  Together we form one of 10 divisions within the State of Victoria.   We are all represented at a State level by Landcare Victoria Inc.

WHAT WE DO

Many of our members are landholders who wish to optimise the health and viability of their properties.  The Network supports our members with a range of services depending on the need:

  • Providing information or advice on land-related challenges
  • Organising on-site field days to inform landholders about current practices and technologies
  • Coordinating field trials to determine better land management practices
  • Assisting with grant applications to fund proposed works
  • Organising proposed works to be undertaken.

This assistance applies in areas such as:

  • Weeding and pest animal control
  • Soil-monitoring and maintaining healthy soils
  • Establishing shelter belts and indigenous plantings - what, where and how to plant
  • Managing land erosion and salinity control
  • Optimising land management practices
  • Monitoring and enhancing water quality
  • Protecting, enhancing and/or connecting biodiversity throughout the region
