ALBERT RIVER LANDCARE GROUP
Albert River Landcare Group looks after community-based natural resource management along the Albert River, encompassing Alberton, Stacey's Bridge and Hiawatha. Members actively apply for grants, plant trees, remove noxious weeds, organise social events and participate in the JARR Project. Current projects include the Coastcare-funded revegetation and weed control project at the Albert River mouth, Koala habitat protection and Waterwatch. Contact: Jenny Davies T: 0490 136 261 E: [email protected] BINGINWARRI LANDCARE SUB-GROUP Binginwarri Landcare Sub-Group members is a long established and active group. Projects include extensive tree planting to assist with controlling tunnel erosion and for connecting wildlife corridors. The Group is also conducting a biodiversity program which will result in a detailed database of indigenous plants was well as recording bird sightings within the area. Up and coming projects including the revitalisation and enhancement of a local public area. Contact: Barbara Waterman T: 0409 373 371 E: [email protected] W: www.bingilcg.org MERRIMAN CREEK LANDCARE GROUP Merriman Creek Landcare Group members actively participate in Landcare initiatives throughout their region of Stradbroke - Seaspray. Notably, they have engaged in several landscape-level projects that target Merriman Creek between the Wullung and Seaspray. The Merriman Creek Biodiversity Project involved spraying the Creek between Stradbroke West and Owen's Lane for woody weeds. Other projects include the follow-up treatment of pest plants along Merriman Creek, monitoring of African Lovegrass and Serrated Tussock infestations, trapping Indian Myna populations and hosting field days on soil health and pest plant and animal control programs. The Group usually meets four times a year. Contact: Melissa Ainsworth T: 03 5146 8328 E: [email protected] W: westgippsland.landcarevic.net.au/merriman-creek WONYIP LANDCARE GROUP Wonyip Landcare Group is an extremely active and forward-thinking group involved in everything from planning with HVP Plantations for the re-establishment of native vegetation along riparian areas within plantation land, to pest plant and animal control. In 2007, the Group was successful in receiving funding from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to establish wildlife corridors for the tiger quoll (spot-tailed quoll). Subsequent projects have included the development of Wonyipedia, a field guild to endangered species in the district and the establishment of a conservation trail, and a project to build and place 90+ nest-boxes for the protection of arboreal species in the Strzelecki Ranges. Members of the group have also been actively involved in Waterwatch and the JARR Project. Contact: Helen Spittle T: 0425 710001 E: [email protected] F: wonyiplandcareteam WOODSIDE LANDCARE GROUP Woodside Landcare Group is active in the area of Woodside along the South Gippsland Highway. Its boundaries are south to McLoughlin's Beach, east to Woodside Beach and north to Giffard Darriman. The Group is very active and social with members heavily involved in the control of pest plants and animals, salinity remediation, and revegetation on private land. Woodside Landcare Group was one of the first groups in the area and was instrumental in the formation of the YYLN. Members are actively involved in the Mullungdung to Coast Project (protecting remnant vegetation, connectivity corridors and cross-property biodiversity planning), and the Gippsland Plains Drought Tolerant Pasture Group (trialling perennial pastures). Members are also undertaking a Coastcare-funded project aimed at linking remnants to Jack Smith Lake. Contact: Jane Gordon T: 0429 464 212 E: [email protected] YARRAM URBAN LANDCARE GROUP Yarram Urban Landcare Group is a recently formed group and is very active in assisting in the restoration of the little-known Bicentennial (Botanical) Gardens in Yarram. Members have also been actively involved in Indian Myna control and have several other projects in the pipeline.
