Wellington Shire Community Assistance Grant . $5,000 Project Period 2014 - 2015 Project Objectives Replacing a wall of weeds with indigenous plants along the Port Albert foreshore, combined with a series of sailing events to encourage greater participation in the sport. Project Description Between Rutter Park and the Port Albert Water Sports and Safety Centre, which includes the Coastguard and Port Albert Yacht Club, there is currently a giant wall of weeds. These Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) such as box thorn and mirror bush which are on council land (and are required to be removed by law) will be removed by excavator and replaced with local indigenous plants in a project involving the Alberton, Port Albert and wider community. With our new found visibility because of the removal of the weeds and the installation of signage there will then be a series of sailing events that are open to the public to encourage people to give sailing a try. These events will include a try sailing day, a learn to sail course and an Australia Day sailing activity as well as the normal sailing program of social and competitive sailing. No boats or experience needed so it will be open to all. |
