Coastal Saltmarsh Protection Project

The Coastal Saltmarsh Protection Project was established to protect and enhance high priority areas of coastal vegetation (saltmarsh and mangrove communities) adjoining the RAMSAR Listed Wetlands of Corner Inlet & Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park. This project was run in partnership with WGCMA. It commenced in 2009 and was completed in 2014.
This project has been successful in protecting 700 ha of saltmarsh on freehold land between Port Albert and Reeves Beach.

Achievements include;
  • 700 ha of coastal vegetation fenced off and protected from stock
  • 25 km fencing erected, using “wildlife friendly” plain wire
  • Revegetation - 35,000 locally indigenous tubestock planted
  • 10 individual project site
  • involved 8 landholders
  • 50 ha Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) treated and/or removed – eg. Gorse, Boxthorn, Spiny rush.
  • 10 stock crossings
  • 2 Field days – Saltmarshes Uncovered and Jack & Albert Rivers Discovery Day at Port Albert

This project won the Natural Environment Award in the Victorian Coastal Awards for Excellence 2014 run by the Victorian Coastal Council.
